01 — Our story

Built slowly, on purpose.

ATELIER was founded in 2009 by Astrid Holm and Jonas Beck, in a single rented room with two drawing boards and a shared conviction: that the age of the loud building was ending. The first commissions were small — a bathroom, a bookshop, a stair — and each was treated with the seriousness of a museum.

The studio grew the way we believe buildings should grow: slowly, and only when necessary. Sixteen years later we remain deliberately compact. Every project is led by a partner from first sketch to final site visit, supported by a team that joins each building’s life early and stays with it long after handover.

Today the practice works across Denmark, Norway, Spain, Portugal and Italy, on houses, galleries, workplaces and the careful repair of older structures. The tools have changed; the temperament has not.

03Principles What we return to

Three rules we rarely break.

(01)

Restraint over statement

We are not interested in buildings that perform for the camera and exhaust their inhabitants. A plan that works quietly for fifty years is a better legacy than a silhouette that trends for a season.

(02)

Materials that age well

Short palettes, honestly applied. Stone, timber, lime, brass — surfaces that deepen with use rather than degrade. We test every material against weather, touch and time before it enters a project.

(03)

Buildings as hosts

Architecture should set the table, not dominate the meal. Our best reviews are the ones clients give years later, when the house has disappeared into the ease of everyday life.
